Elderly couple found dead in their home in Santo Tirso

An elderly couple, aged 74 and 80, were found dead in the house they lived in in Refojos de Riba de Ave, in the municipality of Santo Tirso. Neighbours noticed the elderly couple’s absence when they began to notice that a significant amount of water had been leaving the house since Wednesday.

The alert was issued at the GNR station in Santo Tirso this Saturday morning by a family member who said they had not heard from the couple “for some time”.

At 12:30 p.m., the military arrived at the house and called the Santo Tirso volunteers to enter the house. Inside, they found a man lying on the floor and a woman sitting on the toilet, both lifeless. They appeared to have died at different times, as one body was more decomposed than the other.

The water leak is believed to have been caused by an open tap in the bathroom where the woman was.

INEM and the health delegate were also called to the scene, who confirmed the death. Since the circumstances of the couple’s death were unclear, the Porto Judicial Police were called.
