Striker Thomas Müller announced his farewell to the German football team on Monday after 131 caps over 14 years, during which time he played in four World Cups and four European Championships.
“After 131 international games and 45 goals, I am saying goodbye to the federal eagle of the German tricolor,” Thomas Müller said in a video published on his official page.
The 34-year-old said goodbye to the national team after winning Euro 2024, a competition hosted by Germany, which was knocked out in the quarter-finals by Spain (2-1 after extra time), who will go on to win the title on Sunday.
Müller’s last game for Mannschaft was against Spain, and the striker came on in the 80th minute.
Thomas Müller won the 2014 World Cup with Germany in Brazil, where they beat Argentina in the final through Mario Götze in extra time in the 113th minute.
“We celebrated together and sometimes we cried together. I would like to thank all the fans and team members. Thank you for your support throughout all these years,” he said.
The striker, who has another year left on his contract with Bayern Munich, leaves as Germany’s third-most capped player and sixth-highest goalscorer.
