The Setúbal Judicial Police (PJ) announced today the arrest of a 19-year-old man suspected of having ordered five thousand euros in counterfeit banknotes from a foreign country and having another 30 thousand counterfeit euros at home.
According to an official source from the Setubal police, the investigation began in January last year, when a customs delegation at Lisbon airport discovered a suspicious parcel containing counterfeit 50-euro notes worth a total of five thousand euros.
Given that the recipient lived on the southern bank of the Tagus, the case was immediately referred to the Setubal prosecutor’s office, which on Monday, during a search of the house, arrested the suspect and confiscated another 30,000 euros in counterfeit banknotes and prohibited weapons.
According to the Setubal SP, this type of order usually comes from China or Turkey and the seized banknotes are “crude counterfeits” that do not stand up to closer scrutiny, but can nevertheless be accepted in certain circumstances and in places where cash payments are made.
The detainee, who has no criminal record, is accused of committing crimes related to the acquisition of currency for circulation, the sale of counterfeit currency and the possession of prohibited weapons, and is due to appear today for his first judicial examination at the Setubal Court to file a request for possible coercive measures.
