French Federation Condemns Racist Chants by Argentine Footballers

The French Football Federation (FFF) will file a lawsuit against “racist and discriminatory insults” from Argentine footballers who appear in a video posted on Instagram chanting offensive language, the FFF said on Tuesday.

“Given the seriousness of the shocking comments, which are contrary to the values of sport and human rights, the FFF president has contacted his Argentine counterpart and FIFA directly and has decided to file a complaint with the court regarding racial and discriminatory insults,” the Gallic federation said in a statement.

French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera has called “pathetic” the chants directed at French footballers that can be heard in a video published on the profile of Argentine midfielder Enso Fernandez (ex-Benfica), who plays for English club Chelsea while he celebrated the victory in the America’s Cup with his colleagues on Sunday.

“This behaviour is even more unacceptable because it is repeated. Is this FIFA’s reaction?” the official asked, recalling the racist comments made online by Argentine fans against the French national team after the South American team won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, winning the final on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

Additionally, the music heard in a recent video filmed on an Argentine bus was popularized by some Albicelestes fans during the 2022 World Cup, with chants alluding to the players’ African origins, as well as transphobic comments about an alleged relationship with Kylian Mbappe.

The recent football rivalry between France and Argentina was born at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, when Les Bles beat Argentina 4-3 in the round of 16, thanks in large part to the high-level performances of Mbappe (on display at Les Bles Stadium on Tuesday, Real Madrid), then 19, who scored two goals.
