Ecuadorian football mourns the death of Justin Cornejo, a young goalkeeper aged just 20 who belonged to Barcelona de Guayaquil (Ecuador). The information was confirmed on Tuesday in a statement by the club itself, which will face RB Bragantino of Portuguese Pedro Caixinha on Thursday, a match that is already being tried to be cancelled.
“There are no words or phrases that can erase the pain we feel right now. The memory he leaves us all with will be what gives us the strength to get through this. Justin, you will forever be in our hearts. Rest in peace, my friend. We love you very much,” the heartfelt post reads.
Following the news, CONMEBOL and the Ecuadorian Football Federation mourned the player’s death on Sunday, a scenario that will unfortunately be confirmed on Tuesday.
According to Ecuadorian media, Justin Cornejo was hospitalized for two days after a heavy fall at home last Sunday. Apparently, the fall occurred in the bathroom, and the player suffered a head injury after a strong blow to the head.
No one can say this phrase, they can relieve us from the pain we experience in these moments.
The memory he gives us all will be what gives us the strength we need to get out of this.
Justin will always be in our hearts.
Rest in peace, friend.
We want you… pic.twitter.com/x03hS6H4ZP
