The Portuguese Red Cross’ Vale+ food collection campaign is taking place today and Sunday in nearly 600 supermarkets across the country, with the aim of “strengthening their capacity to respond to requests for support”.
Donations can be made by purchasing cash vouchers or food items, as happened last weekend.
The campaign will run from July 12 to 26 after raising enough funds in both vouchers and food in March to donate nearly 149,000 meals.
Since the project’s inception in 2021, Vale+ has already provided 600,000 meals to those most in need.
Calling for citizen participation, the President of the Portuguese Red Cross stressed that these campaigns help strengthen “social response capacities on the ground for vulnerable families, homeless people, migrants and refugees.”
In an interview with Lusa at the end of June, António Saraiva said that the number of requests for help to the institution has been growing since 2022.
Requests for assistance increased by about 73% between 2022 and 2023 after doubling between 2021 and 2022, he said, and the trend is expected to continue in 2024.
