Tennis player Nuno Borges reaches his first ATP final

Portugal’s Nuno Borges, the national number one, qualified for his first ATP final on Saturday, defeating Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante in straight sets in the semi-finals in Bastad, Sweden.

The player ranked 51st in the world defeated the player ranked 121st in one hour and eight minutes by 6-3 and 6-4 and will now face Spain’s Rafael Nadal, the former world number one and currently ranked 261st, on Swedish clay on Sunday.

This is the first time the 27-year-old from Maia has qualified for an ATP tournament, becoming the fourth Portuguese to do so, after Frederico Gil, João Sousa and Pedro Sousa.

In the final of Bastad, Borges will face the 38-year-old Mallorcan, winner of 22 Grand Slam tournaments and a clay court specialist, who shortly before won the other semi-final against Croatian Duje Ajdukovic (ranked 130th) with a score of 4-4, 6, 6-3 and 6-4.
