João Sousa, a former Portuguese professional tennis player, called Nuno Borges’ 6-3, 6-2 victory over Spain’s Rafael Nadal in Bastad on Sunday “great news”.
“I think it’s a happy day for Nuno and a happy day for Portuguese tennis. I’m happy that Nuno won this ATP title,” begins the recently retired player from Guimarães, still the only Portuguese ATP winner with four titles.
By imposing himself on the left-hander and former world number one in one hour and 27 minutes during his return to competition after Roland Garros, the national number one and world number 51 became only the second Portuguese tennis player to win on the main circuit after Joao Sousa (Kuala Lumpur in 2013, Valencia in 2015, Estoril Open in 2018 and Pune in 2022).
“It obviously means a lot to him and we Portuguese are very proud of it and we see that national tennis is growing and that Nuno has achieved great success. Nuno’s title is great news,” concluded player Minho in a conversation with the Lusa agency.
In addition to winning his first title, 27-year-old Nuno Borges became the fifth tennis player in the world to win a final over Nadal, after Novak Djokovic (four times), Roger Federer (twice), Horacio Ceballos and Andy Murray (once each).
Maiato, 27, has already won an ATP title, but in doubles, at the Estoril Open in 2022 in the company of his friend and compatriot Francisco Cabral.
