Head of State Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said on Tuesday that he was following what was happening in the United States as a “priority” but declined to comment on the withdrawal of North American President Joe Biden from his candidacy for re-election.
“I am not going to comment on what is happening in the internal life of a country that is also an ally, a friendly country and where there is a community of two million Portuguese,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa explained to journalists at the end of a visit to the Centro Infantil dos Olivais Sul in Lisbon.
However, the President of the Republic stressed the importance of the elections in North America, which will take place on November 5 this year, in which former President Donald Trump will again become a candidate with the support of the Republican Party.
“Whatever happens, it affects the world, determines relations with Europe, determines the situation in Ukraine, determines the economic situation in the world. And therefore, we are monitoring what is happening in this friendly and allied country as a priority,” he said.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa then stressed that “what happens at European level will also be important with the launch of a new team that will give life to a new cycle in Europe, in the European Commission, in the European Council, in the European Parliament”, noting that the previous Prime Minister António Costa will take over as President of the European Council.
“The sum of the two realities will determine the life of the country and our life in the coming years, four, five years, so what is happening now in the United States of America and what will happen in Europe when they enter, according to the words of the new managers,” he believes.
North American President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he was dropping his candidacy for re-election, citing the interests of the Democratic Party and the country, and announced his support for the candidacy of his vice president, Kamala Harris.
