The 2030 Winter Olympics will be held in the French Alps, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided on Wednesday, setting a number of conditions, including that a contract must be signed by October 1.
French President Emmanuel Macron assured the IOC that the new government would provide all the necessary guarantees for the organization of the event and would sign the contract within the deadlines set by the Olympic organization.
“We want to thank you for the trust you have placed in us. We will say this and we will honor our commitments,” the French president assured two days before the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will last until August. 11th.
The IOC approved the French Alps’ candidacy by 84 votes in favor, four against and seven abstentions, but also required that a contract with the European country’s government be approved by the National Assembly by March 1, 2025.
France’s proposal, the only one put to a vote, focuses on using ski resorts in the Alps region as well as ice sports infrastructure in the coastal city of Nice.
France has hosted the Winter Olympic Games three times: the first in 1924, then in 1968 in Grenoble and in 1992 in Albertville.
