The next school year in most schools will begin from September 12 to 16, according to the school calendar published this Thursday in Diário da República, which for the first time was defined for a four-year period.
“In order to ensure predictable conditions for schools and families, this order establishes in an innovative way the school calendar that will be in effect for the next four school years, from 2024-2025 to 2027-2028,” the government said in a letter to preschool, primary and secondary education institutions, as well as private special education institutions.
The school calendar was determined annually until the previous government decided to determine it for a period of two years.
The first period of the 2024-2025 academic year will take place in state preschool institutions, as well as in basic and secondary education institutions from September 12 to 16 and December 17.
The second period runs from January 6 to April 4 of the following year, and the third begins on April 22 and ends on June 6 for grades 9, 11 and 12 of school, in this case on the 13th for years 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10, and on the 27th of the same month in pre-school education and the 1st cycle of basic education.
According to the order, schools may “adopt a two-year organization of the school year” provided that the calendar is agreed upon with “the relevant municipal council and other schools in the municipality,” that at least the number of days specified in the said calendar are included, that tests and examinations are conducted in accordance with the calendar, and that “at least three assessment reporting moments for students and their parents or guardians” are guaranteed, the latter of which “must be of a final nature.”
In the case of private special education institutions dependent on cooperatives and parent associations that have an agreement with the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation, the first period lasts from 2 to 6 September and 31 December, and the second from 3 January to 27 June, 2025.
It is also necessary to bring the adopted work schedule of educational and pedagogical events to the General Directorate of Schools before the beginning of the relevant academic year.
The order, signed by the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation, Fernando Manuel de Almeida Alexandre, comes into force on Friday.
