A 39-year-old man suspected of domestic violence against his partner was arrested on Wednesday at his home in Coimbra after the victim alerted the police, PSP said Thursday.
“When the PSP arrived at the scene, the woman, who was on the public road, reported that during an argument she had been pushed, hit in the face and threatened by her partner,” the Coimbra PSP said in a note sent to the Lusa agency.
According to the 33-year-old victim, the quarrel was caused by family problems, which are common, and added that despite the constant insults, she had remained silent until now, trying not to aggravate the quarrels and reduce her partner’s aggressiveness.
She also noted that when she was separated from her partner, she was not allowed to leave the house with her three minor children – a 15-month-old son from both of them and the victim’s two children, aged 11 and 12.
“In connection with the victim’s statement, the police went to the house to discuss and gather the suspect’s version of events,” the police explained.
“However, he suddenly locked himself in a room with his 15-month-old son and had to be forced into the room,” he adds.
In the presence of the PSP, the suspect refused to cooperate and was eventually arrested.
