Seven years in prison for youth gang leaders accused of robberies and attacks on immigrants

Seven years in prison were handed down to two leaders of a group of young men accused of robbing and brutally attacking Nepalese and Indian immigrants, as well as homeless people and a student in Olhão. Another defendant was given a five-year suspended sentence after the execution, while the last was acquitted.

“They took advantage of the special regime for young people and were acquitted of threatening gangs, but the sentences are still very harsh. We will appeal,” he told reporters. CM Andre Caetano, lawyer for one of those arrested.

The young men, then 16, brought terror to the centre of Olhão in early 2023, randomly picking out frail men on night walks to beat and rob. Images of the attacks were shared on social media, with particular attention paid to the attack on a Nepalese man who was attacked and robbed. He was visited by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The judges found the defendants’ actions “disgusting and extremely serious”, revealing “people who are not inclined to the rules of society”.
