Portugal’s Teresa Bonvalot was eliminated this Sunday in the second round of the women’s surfing competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics, losing the third repechage to Japan’s Shino Matsuda in Teahupo’o, French Polynesia.
After a first-round “fall” over North American Karissa Moore, Olympic champion and five-time world champion, and Matsuda on Saturday, 24-year-old Teresa Bonvalot scored 6.84 points (3.67 and 3.17) this Sunday and was once again defeated by the Japanese team.
The Cascais surfer, ninth at Tokyo 2020, led for much of the run, but a snorkel gave Matsuda a 9.77 lead (7.67 and 2.1) and one of the 16 spots heading into the next round.
Also in the running for a place in the third round, scheduled for Monday at 22:48 (Lisbon time), is Yolanda Hopkins, fifth at Tokyo 2020, who also faces a repechage this Sunday in the eighth heat, which starts at 21:00, against New Zealander Saffi Vette.
Hopkins, 26, was passed to this stage by South African Sarah Baum and North American Caroline Marks.
The women’s surfing competition will take place until Wednesday in Teaupo’o in French Polynesia, more than 15,000 kilometers from the French capital.
