This Sunday, Portugal’s Filipa Martins, in her third Olympic appearance, achieved an unprecedented qualification for the all-around final of the artistic gymnastics competition at the 2024 Games in Paris.
After the 28-year-old gymnast from Porto finished 37th at Rio 2016 (the best result ever for a Portuguese athlete) and 43rd at Tokyo 2020, she secured one of the 24 spots in the Olympic final scheduled for Thursday, Monday, at 6:15 p.m. local time (5:15 p.m. Lisbon).
Filipa Martins scored 53,166 points, including 14,133 on vault thanks to Yurchenko’s double pirouette, 13,800 on asymmetrical parallels, her specialty, 12,633 on floor and 12,600 on balance beam.
The Acro Clube da Maia gymnast was also the first and only Portuguese to reach the World Cup final in asymmetrical parallels (eighth place) in Kitakyushu in 2021, when she also competed for the first time in the all-around final (seventh place), a feat she repeated in 2023 in Antwerp (21st place).
