According to an analysis by Universal McCann (UM), the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games, which was held outside a stadium for the first time in history, was watched by more than 2.7 million Portuguese.
The opening ceremony, broadcast live exclusively on RTP1, took place in Paris, on the banks of the Seine.
“The broadcast started at 18:30 Portugal time and it was also the first time the show took place at sunset, and until now all opening ceremonies have taken place at night,” said Universal McCann, the media advertising agency of the IPG Mediabrands group, in an analysis of the event’s audience.
The show “had a total audience of two million 792 thousand viewers, with an average audience of 819 thousand viewers, which is a “share” of 21.3%.
Compared to previous ceremonies (Tokyo in 2021 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016), “we see that this ceremony was the most popular.”
The hour-long broadcast of the Paris ceremony, “which began after work, helped to increase the audience and make it the most watched of the last three editions.”
Of the last three opening ceremonies, “we see that the Tokyo opening ceremony, which took place from 12:00 to 15:52 Portuguese time, was the least watched with an average audience of 361 thousand viewers and a ‘share’ of 14.5%”, while Rio de Janeiro “had the highest share (26.2%), meaning that of the people watching TV at home, 26.2% were tuned to RTP1 during the opening ceremony” in 2016, UM concludes.
The Olympic Games will last until August 11 in Paris.
