The men’s individual triathlon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed until Wednesday due to poor water quality in the Seine River where the swimming leg is to take place, the organisation said.
After cancelling two river adaptation sessions scheduled for Sunday and Monday, World Triathlon and Paris2024 organisers have decided to reschedule the men’s race, featuring Portugal’s Vasco Vilas and Ricardo Batista, for Wednesday at 10:45am local time (9:45am in Lisbon).
The men’s competition, scheduled for 8am today, will be followed by the women’s competition on Wednesday at 8am local time, featuring Portugal’s Melanie Santos and Maria Tome.
“Paris 2024 and World Triathlon confirm that their priority is the health of the athletes. The tests carried out today in the Seine have shown that the water quality levels do not provide sufficient guarantees for the event to take place,” the statement said.
If water quality does not improve, triathlons could become duathlons with the exception of the swim leg.
Rain is forecast again in Paris on Wednesday and Thursday.
