The creative director in charge of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris has assured that the show featuring drag queens was not inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”. After the news spread around the world and was sharply criticized by the Catholic Church and the far right, Thomas Jolly decided to go public to clarify that the show was not intended as a satire on a religious basis and that it was in fact intended to represent a pagan festival associated with the gods of Olympus, where the Olympic Games were born.
“You will never find in me the desire to ridicule or denigrate anything. I wanted to hold a ceremony that would correct and reconcile. And would confirm the values of our Republic,” he assured, as quoted by the newspaper. Le Figaro.
The presentation featured several transvestites, a transgender woman and a naked man described as Dionysus, the Greek god of WINE.
“Dionysus arrives at this table. He is here because he is the god of parties (…), wine and the father of Sequana, a goddess associated with the river. The idea was rather to create a great pagan god of the party associated with the gods of Olympus,” he explained.
According to Olympic organisers, the aim of the show was to raise awareness among viewers “of the absurdity of violence between people”. Thomas Jolly also said the aim was to celebrate diversity and pay tribute to the festival and French gastronomy.
The Catholic Church and the far right called the presentation a “mockery of Christianity” and an “ode to ‘woke’ culture.”
