The Israeli army confirmed that it carried out a retaliatory attack in a residential area of Beirut, the Lebanese capital, against a Hezbollah commander for “crossing a red line” that led to the deaths of 12 children and young people in the Golan Heights. The blast killed several people, including Fawad Sukar and two children, and wounded 85.
“The Israel Defense Forces carried out a selective attack in Beirut against a commander responsible for the murder of children in the Golan Heights and the killing of many other Israeli civilians. There are no changes in the home front at this time. Command,” the military said in a post shared on X.
According to the newspaper Times of IsraelFawad Sukar was responsible for military activities and was also a senior military adviser to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Local sources in Lebanon, cited by international agencies, reported an explosion in the southern suburb of Beirut known as Dahye, a major Hezbollah stronghold.
Let us recall that last weekend, ten children and young people between the ages of ten and 16 were injured by a rocket while they were on a football field in the Golan Heights in northern Israel.
After the attack, Beirut was on guard against predictable Israeli retaliation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised a “tough response” from Israel to the attack that killed 12 children and teenagers.
“The State of Israel cannot leave this attack unanswered. Our response will come and it will be tough,” the prime minister assured, hours after the Israeli military cabinet gave the executive branch the green light to respond “appropriately” to the Hezbollah attack.
Lebanon’s prime minister has described Israel’s attack south of Beirut as “blatant aggression,” demanding “the right to take action” against “Israeli hostility.” Najib Mikati in a statement condemned the “criminal act” and called on “the international community to take responsibility and put pressure on Israel to stop its aggression and threats and comply with international resolutions.”
