This Wednesday, Portuguese shooter Maria Ines Barros failed to qualify for the final of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, only being eliminated in the shoot-off.
The 23-year-old Penafidelense native, who is the first Portuguese in the event at the Games, completed five series of 25 dishes with 121 correct answers, level with Australia’s Penny Smith and China’s Zhang Xinqiu, but ended up being the first to be eliminated in a tiebreaker with those two rivals, finishing the race in eighth place.
In a “shootout” where an athlete is eliminated as soon as they miss, Penny Smith emerges victorious and advances to the finals in sixth and final place.
Despite the elimination, Maria Ines Barros secured an Olympic diploma for Portugal, joining cyclist Nelson Oliveira, who finished seventh in the time trial, and Vasco Vilas and Ricardo Batista, who finished fifth and sixth in the triathlon respectively.
Maria Ines Barros achieved Portugal’s third-best result on the Olympic stage, after Armando Marques’ silver in Montreal 1976 and Manuel Vieira da Silva’s seventh place in Atlanta 1996.
