Portugal’s Vasco Vilas and Ricardo Batista, both Olympic debutants, finished fifth and sixth respectively in the Paris 2024 men’s triathlon race on Wednesday, won by Britain’s Alex Yee in 1:43.33 hours.
Vilasa, who equalled João Pereira’s performance at Rio 2026, completed the swimming (1,500 metres), cycling (40 kilometres) and running (10 kilometres) in 1:43.56 hours, 23 seconds behind the winner, with Batista finishing two seconds behind.
Two Portuguese triathletes, 13 and 15 seconds away from the bronze medal respectively, secured two more diplomas for Portugal (places between fourth and eighth) after Nelson Oliveira was seventh in the time trial and shooter Maria Ines Barros took one of the first eight spots in today’s Olympic qualifying.
New Zealander Hayden Wild won silver in the triathlon, six seconds behind Alex Yee, while France’s Leo Bergere won bronze, 10 seconds behind.
