Crime in Portugal rose last year compared to pandemic-restricted 2020 and 2021, but remains stable compared to 2019, the interior minister said on Wednesday.
“Within 2022, the indicators that we have so far show that we maintain levels of general crime equivalent to those of 2019, naturally, they increase in relation to 2020 and 2021, but these were the years of the pandemic, and most of time we are in custody,” said José Luis Carneiro in Parliament.
In the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, where he is heard, the minister said that compared to 2019, last year there was a decrease in violent and serious crimes, “albeit minor ones”, while ordinary crimes remain stable.
Despite this reduction in violent and serious crime, the official noted that the “intensity of violence” has increased with the use of firearms and edged weapons.
All crime figures for 2022 will be disclosed in the Internal Security Annual Report, which is the responsibility of the Secretary General of the Internal Security System, to be submitted to the Assembly of the Republic by March 31.
