Two men, aged 39 and 40, who used counterfeit keys to break into homes and steal items of great value were arrested on Tuesday in Vila Nova de Gaia, the PSP Metropolitan Command in Porto said on Friday.
The PSP said in a statement that one of the suspects had been part of an organised group that had been burglarising residential properties using false keys since 2016.
A source from the PSP in Porto told Lusa that “highly specialized” people were involved and that the items seized after the arrests were of “great value.”
The operation, “targeting individuals who were organising thefts from residential buildings using false keys”, was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Units of the Porto Metropolitan Command and the Braga District Command.
Both suspects do not have permanent residence in Portugal.
Both were intercepted in Gaia after a theft that took place at a house in Braga.
As a result of the police operation, stolen property, including more than 500 gold and silver coins, was seized from the houses.
Dozens of luxury watches, €12,500 in cash, lock decoders and signal inhibitors, precision instruments, night vision and communication devices, a dog repeller, firearms, and precious metal testing equipment.
The suspects will appear before the court today for the application of coercive measures.
