The Biarritz Pelota World Cup arrives with news

The 2022 Basque Pelota World Cup will be held from October 23 to 29 in Biarritz. A total of 34 countriesa record figure, will participate in this World Championship in which the Euskal Selekzioa will not be. The Basque representatives will play with the national teams of Spain and France.

There are some news in this World Cup: there will be female participation in basket tip, the pallets will not have to be “noble woods” but they will be able to use such modern materials as carbon fiber, the men of the rubber modalities will compete in shorts Y the new ‘urban’ discipline of frontball will debut.

The inclusion in the absolute World Cup of the women’s point basket event culminates a process that already took a decisive step with the 2021 Under-23 World Cup, played in Castilla-León in a 36-meter fronton, in which Maite Ortiz were proclaimed winners by Mendibil and Eneritz Lizardi. Both appear in the selection of these Biarritz World Cups, in which women will already participate in the 54-meter pedimentthe largest dimension.

As for the materials of the rubber paddles, the obligation that they be made of wood, and noble wood, is removed to open the possibility of synthetic materials such as carbon fiber.

Another change will affect the traditional kit. In the rubber modalities, men will be able to wear short pants, instead of long pants. It is, said García Angulo, a way to bring the competition closer to the real conditions in which the pelota players train: “Everyone trains short, even those with the top basket.” Women will compete with skirt.

But the great novelty of the championships will be the large-scale launch of frontballa modality that gathers the quintessence of the ball: the pelotari hits the ball with his hand against a single four-meter wall. For frontball, which can be played against any wall, the Bidart fronton has been set up for this World Cup, where it will be played against the side wall, surrounded by stands all around for the public to follow closely. It is also an expanding test. Next year’s Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile will feature frontball on their programme. After the World Cup, FIPV will give training courses in Venezuela for the countries of the region.

The championships will distribute their 30-meter, 36-meter and 54-meter racquetball, ratchet and frontball events through Biarritz, Bayonne, Hasparren and Bidart. The Biarritz fronton is the one with the largest capacity, with a capacity of 1,200 people. All tickets are already sold.

In the last World Cup edition, Barcelona 2018, France prevailed, with Spain in second place by a difference of only one silver medal.
