Swimming training cancelled again due to water quality in the Seine.

Swimming training for the mixed triathlon relays was cancelled this Sunday, ahead of the race, due to water quality in the Seine, but the Paris 2024 Olympics organisers expect improvement in the coming hours.

“Given the heavy rainfall on 31 July and 1 August, which was particularly intense upstream of Paris, we are still seeing impacts on water quality. We expect an improvement in the next few hours, but not enough to allow water familiarisation training. Swimming,” Paris2024 said in a statement this morning.

On Saturday, organising committee president Tony Estangue appeared “calm” about the mixed relay, in which Portugal will be represented by Vasco Vilasa, Ricardo Batista, Maria Tomé and Melanie Santos.

“There is no reason to think that this will not happen. We have a window until Tuesday,” he recalled, noting that “the weather forecast for this weekend is more favorable.”

This week, after two cancelled training sessions in Seine, the men’s race, in which Portugal’s Vasco Vilas and Ricardo Batista were fifth and sixth respectively, was postponed from Tuesday to Wednesday due to unsuitable conditions in Seine.

The River Seine will also be the venue for open water swimming, with the women’s race, featuring Portugal’s Angelique Andre, and the men’s race scheduled for August 8 and 9 respectively.
