An earthquake measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale, centered about four kilometers northeast of Santa Barbara, on the island of Terceira, was felt early Sunday morning but did not cause any personal or property damage.
According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the earthquake was recorded at 05:29 (06:29 Lisbon time) at stations of the Azores seismic network.
“This earthquake, according to the information available today, did not cause any personal or material damage and was felt with a maximum intensity of III (modified Mercalli scale) in the parish of Sant Bartolomeu de Regatos,” IPMA said in a statement, adding that new reports would be published if the situation so required.
IPMA states that “determining the epicenter of an earthquake is a complex physical and mathematical process that relies on a set of data, algorithms and seismic wave propagation models,” emphasizing that “different agencies may produce slightly different results.”
In addition, preliminary decisions are usually adjusted later to include additional information, he adds, advising to always follow the instructions of civil protection services in all cases.
