PS wants to meet next week with representatives of hospitals that have closed emergency departments.

The Socialist Party announced on Sunday that it would seek meetings next week with hospitals that have closed emergency departments and called on the Prime Minister to present measures to help address the difficulties of the National Health Service.

This was reported to Lusa by the coordinator of the PS parliamentary group for health, João Paulo Correia, after more than 10 emergency care points in the fields of gynecology, obstetrics and pediatrics in the country were closed this weekend.

“Given the seriousness of the problems faced by the SNS, the PS parliamentary group will request meetings with the administrations of these SNS. [Unidades Locais de Saúde] and we will ask that these meetings be held next week,” said João Paulo Correia.

According to the coordinator, these meetings will allow “reaching the level of information” that PS considers “important to convey to the public and public opinion.”

For João Paulo Correia, the situation in the National Health Service shows that “the health action plan presented by the government is failing”, which he considers “clearly worrying, since it has affected thousands of people they are looking for”. SNS daily”.

“The closure of pediatric, obstetric and gynecological emergency departments in some hospitals across the country, far from expected, shows that the health emergency response is not living up to its promises, and this is also due to the lack of planning and programming by the new executive leadership,” he criticized.

The Socialist MP found the “reactive stance” of the new SNS executive directorate, the “silence” of the health minister in recent weeks and the fact that the government has still not been able to reach an agreement with health workers worrying, which he said added “even more instability to the daily life of social networks”.

“Given the silence of the Minister of Health and the new executive directorate, which is incapable of planning and programming, the PS parliamentary group understands that the Prime Minister must give the Portuguese an explanation for the failures of management in this area of health and, above all, give guarantees on what the government plans to do immediately, because the next few weeks, August and also September, are expected to be very problematic in many hospitals in the country,” he warned.

According to João Paulo Correia, “the government has no excuse for these failures,” since the difficulties that SNS is experiencing in the summer due to the lack of doctors to provide scales “are nothing new.”

But, he stressed, “the problems exceed expectations of the difficulties that the SNS faced in the summer,” emphasizing that “the summer plan that the government also promised for this time has already become clear that it does not exist, or, if it does exist, has failed.”

Faced with this situation, the coordinator reiterated that the head of government, Luis Montenegro, “cannot continue without giving explanations to the country” and must “present measures that actually respond to the difficulties of social networks, as promised during the election campaign.”

He also said that what was happening was in line with warnings from the Order of Nurses, the Order of Doctors and health trade unions.

“Everything that is happening has confirmed the worst fears that come from organizations that are not political organizations, but that operate in this sector,” commented João Paulo Correia, considering the most “terrifying” example of pregnant women giving birth 200 kilometers away.

He stressed that the case of the Leiria hospital, where there are restrictions in the emergency gynecological and obstetric department until August 19 and where, as of Monday, emergency care is not available in the area, “is alarming and should mobilize the government to the highest level.”
