Laurent Basolo and João Coelho are the first Portuguese to qualify for track and field at the Olympic Games. A new feature introduced in Paris in track and field competitions is designed to give a second chance to reach the semi-finals for athletes who fail to qualify directly in the qualifying competitions.
In each qualifying round, a predetermined number of participants qualify directly. The rest go to the repechage. All athletes therefore compete at least twice. Such is the case for Lauren Basolo, who today (11:50 a.m.) has a new opportunity to qualify in the 200m. João Coelho is again in contention, also this morning (10:20 a.m.), for a place in the “socks”.
Not all distances have a consolation result. The 100m distances and all distances over 3000m are excluded. Katia Azevedo (400m) and Salome Afonso (1500m) will be able to take advantage.
