Eight areas under yellow warning for heatwave until Wednesday

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) extended yellow weather warnings for hot weather in six areas of mainland Portugal, including Braga and Vila Real, until Wednesday this Monday.

According to a statement from IPMA, these two areas join the areas of Bragança, Évora, Guarda, Beja, Castelo Branco and Portalegre, which are already under yellow warning until 6pm this Monday due to “the persistence of high maximum temperatures”.

Those eight counties will now be under a yellow alert until 6pm on Wednesday.

A yellow warning, the least serious of the three, is issued whenever there is a risk to certain activities due to weather conditions.

IPMA forecasts generally clear skies this Monday with periods of increased cloudiness over the northern and central coasts in the late afternoon and into the mid-morning.

Forecasts also indicate a decrease in maximum temperatures in the northern and central regions and an increase in the Algarve.

The highest maximum temperatures forecast for this Monday will be reached in Evora and Castelo Branco at 39 degrees Celsius, while the lowest will be in Aveiro at 24 degrees Celsius.
