A man has been arrested posing as a doctor at the Central Hospital of Maputo (HCM) and accused of soliciting victims via social media to provide assistance in exchange for money. It is the second case since April, it was announced on Tuesday.
“It is important to note that at the time of neutralization in the premises of the country’s largest medical institution, the fake doctor was not dressed in any institutional uniform, but, nevertheless, thanks to the existing powerful surveillance mechanism, he was quickly identified by employees and security guards who were suspicious of his behavior,” HCM explained in information about the institution’s activities.
At the time of their arrest on July 19, “they were found with a fake doctor.” [um] a badge from a medical center, several identification cards, voting cards, bank cards and hospital documents allegedly belonging to his victims.”
“The individual was incapacitated by local security forces who, upon realising his intrusion, immediately attempted to neutralise him as he attempted to make a disoriented escape,” HCM added.
According to the statement, the fake doctor used several social media profiles, including a photo belonging to a “now deceased” doctor.
This is the second case of this kind registered in one hospital in the last four months.
On April 11, a 24-year-old man was caught red-handed posing as a doctor in the HCM emergency department after doing the same in other departments.
“The neutralization of this fake doctor was only possible thanks to the prompt intervention of the duty team, which immediately contacted the local police authorities, who arrested him at the scene of the crime. It turned out that he had already made incursions into the Polyana, Kanisu and Ciamankulo hospitals,” HCM explained in a statement released at the time.
When he was arrested, the man was “accompanied by one of his victims,” to whom he allegedly promised a consultation with a urologist.
“The characteristics of the uniform he was wearing at the time, as well as his movements and poor coordination with medical personnel on site, raised suspicions among medical workers, who immediately tried to establish his true identity,” he added.
