Pichardo and Pimenta set out in search of medals: see the Portuguese calendar for today

Pedro Pichardo, the Olympic triple jump champion, will begin defending his title at Paris 2024 this Wednesday alongside canoeist Fernando Pimenta, who could become the first Portuguese to win three Olympic medals, by qualifying for the K1 1000.

Having won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Pichardeau will arrive this Wednesday for the triple jump qualification, which starts at 19:15 local time (18:15 in Lisbon), as one of the great candidates for triumph, even after he lost the final of the European Championships in Rome to the Spaniard Jordan Diaz.

The 17.10 metre mark, “necessary” for direct qualification to the final, should not pose any serious difficulties for Pichardot, who broke the national record in Rome with a result of 18.04.

Thiago Pereira, a bronze medallist at the World Indoor Athletics Championships and fourth European Championships, is also hoping to reach the decider, reserved for athletes who clear 17.10m or are in the top 12 in qualifying in a season in which his best is 17.08.

At the Vairès-sur-Marne stadium, Náutico Fernando Pimenta begins his quest to become the first Portuguese to win three Olympic medals: silver in the K2 1000m in London 2012 with Emanuel Silva and bronze in the K1 1000m at Tokyo 2020.

The Limian native will be looking to be one of the first two in his series scheduled for 10:40, which would guarantee him direct entry into Saturday’s semi-finals, thereby avoiding the need to participate in the quarter-final fair this Wednesday at 14:10.

Starting her fifth Olympic Games, Teresa Portela will compete in the K1 500 qualifying event from 10:20 and, if she does not advance directly to the semi-finals, the quarter-finals at 13:30.

Portuguese sailors Carolina Joao and Diogo Costa, no longer with much chance of winning medals but with a very good chance of guaranteeing a diploma, will meet in the “race for medals” with a score of 470 at 15:43 in Marseille, where they will take fifth place.

Mafalda Pires de Lima is kiteboarding in the last qualifying regattas of the semi-finals, aiming to move up from 14th place to 10th, currently 14 points behind.

In skateboarding, Thomas Augusto is making his Olympic debut and is competing in the park qualification, which starts at 12:30 p.m., although he is only competing in the third round, trying to advance to the final scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
