Bangladesh’s caretaker government expected to take oath on Thursday

Bangladesh Army chief Gen. Waqer-uz-Zaman said on Wednesday that a new caretaker government could be sworn in on Thursday after Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus returns to the country.

“We are doing everything possible to organize the inauguration ceremony tomorrow (Thursday),” the soldier said in a statement broadcast on local television, citing 8 p.m. local time (3 p.m. Lisbon) as a possible time.

The same source said the laureate would lead a “democratic process” at the helm of an interim government after Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahbuddin agreed on Tuesday to appoint Yunus, 84, as a senior adviser to the interim government after leaders of the anti-government protests that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina suggested he run.
