Desert lynx captured in Madeira home dies

A desert lynx, a protected species stolen from a home in Funchal in July and returned to its owners last week, died on Wednesday, Associação Ajuda Alimentar a Cães reported.

The association, which supported a petition with more than 20,000 signatures to return the animal to its owners, announced the animal’s death in a post on Facebook.

A desert lynx (caracal) was seized by the GNR on July 3, indicating that the animal was being held illegally by a 38-year-old woman who was identified and issued an administrative offence report for detention of a species prohibited by law.

The rescue operation of the caracal was carried out by the Territorial Command of the PND of Madeira through the Criminal Investigation Department in collaboration with the Nature and Environment Service.

Last week, the Madeira Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) announced that the lynx would be returned to the care of its owners for the “welfare and safety of the animal” pending an administrative investigation and a final decision.

In a post on Facebook, Associação Ajuda Alimentar a Cães said the animal had been “between life and death since the day it was tranquilized to return home with a tranquilizer dart” and had stopped responding to any stimuli on Wednesday.

The association also points out that “the family, together with the lawyer, is already determining responsibility.”
