Pedro Pichardo is set to confirm the Olympic triple jump title he won three years ago in Tokyo this Friday. The final, which starts at 19:13, promises to be a kind of “Cuban guerrilla”.
Pichardo “befriended” Jordan Diaz, who was also born in Cuba but naturalized Spanish, during the European Championships. The Portuguese-Cuban was not pleased that Jordan said he was going to jump one centimeter more than him before the start of the race. In the end, Pichardo came in second, and the Spaniard won the competition.
The controversy was reignited three weeks ago when Lazaro Martinez, who competes for Cuba, posted a message on social media featuring Andy Diaz, a Havana-born athlete who has since become a naturalized Italian. “A week in Paris for the star on the Cuban podium [com] “Andy Diaz and Jordan Diaz. Pichardo was left out,” Lazaro wrote, to which Pichardo immediately responded: “Don’t forget who holds the national record in your country. See you in Paris.”
While Diaz qualified for the finals in 11th and 12th place, Pichardeau had the best jump and Jordan was second. The gold medal was split between them, and there is hope that Britain’s Jonathan Edwards’ world record of 18.29 metres on August 7, 1995, can be broken almost three decades later.
