Manuel Quintas, the former Spanish soldier who shot and attempted to rape two young women in Castelo de Vide, Portalegre, was already known in Spain. “Manolo”, known in the neighboring country as “El Quintas”, has already been sentenced to 76 years in prison for the murder of two young men on the island of Las Pallas in Zamora.
He was released from prison for good behavior in 1996, after 13 years, but returned to prison in 1997 for kidnapping and raping a young woman in Zamora. The man allegedly committed the crime just a month after his release. He found the 30-year-old woman sunbathing by the river and pulled a gun and knife on her. He raped her several times over three hours.
According to the Spanish press, he was released from prison again in 2017 and was unable to return to Zamora for five years. Considered dangerous by the authorities, the sexual predator, who was part of the Foreign Legion, crossed the border and was now living in a campervan on the Povoa e Meadas dam in Castelo de Vide.
Last Tuesday evening, “Manolo” attacked two young women on the bank of the dam, tried to rape them and shot them. He was eventually arrested.
Double murder
“El Quintas” committed one of the crimes that still marks the city of Zamora. The man killed a couple of students, aged 18 and 19, on the island of Las Pallas. Aurora Barbero Luelmo and José Manuel Tamame Dominguez decided to take a walk along the river when they were surprised by “Manolo”, who stole money and thread from them, gun in hand.
The killer tied up the couple to prevent them from pursuing him, but Aurora began to scream in panic and angered “El Quintas”. The killer threw the girl into the river and pushed her until she drowned. He then grabbed Jose and strangled him with a handkerchief.
Five days later, police caught El Quintas, who confessed to the crimes.
