The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, expressed this Saturday “great pride” for the Olympic champions Madison, cyclists Youri Leitan and Rui Oliveira, winners of this track race at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
“With a feeling of great pride, satisfaction and satisfaction, the President of the Republic warmly congratulates cyclists Yuri Leitão and Rui Oliveira for their brilliant achievement of winning the gold medal in the Madison race at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, their sixth Olympic title and the first in cycling history in Portugal,” reads the message published this Saturday.
According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, “the Olympic champions won a race of the highest quality, the emotion of which left all Portuguese people breathless”, and confirmed “the excellent route and the high level of sport achieved”, highly appreciating cycling and national sport.
The President of the Republic also recalls that Leitão, who a few days earlier took second place in the Olympic omnium, is the first Portuguese athlete to win two medals at the Olympic Games in the same year, “a sporting level reserved only for a few”.
“President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa congratulates cyclists on this unforgettable national sport, based on the spirit of victory and outstanding sporting achievements that fill the Portuguese with pride,” the text says.
Following Yuri Leitao’s silver medal in the omnium, the Portuguese duo scored 55 points this Saturday in the 200 laps of the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome, eight more than Italy, with Simone Consonni and Elia Viviani second in the classification and Denmark with Niklas Larsen and Michael Moerkoev third with 41 points.
In their Portuguese debut in men’s athletics, Yuri Leitão and Rui Oliveira joined Carlos Lopes, Rosa Mota, Fernanda Ribeiro, Nelson Évora and Pedro Pichardo, all Olympic champions in athletics, adding to Portugal’s 32nd Olympic medal, the fourth this year.
