This Saturday, Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret became the Olympic champion in sport climbing at Paris 2024, repeating the feat achieved at Tokyo 2020: North American Brooke Rabutu won silver, and Austria’s Jessica Pilz won bronze.
Garnbret, 25, won the combined event with 84.4 points in bouldering and an 84.1-point lead for a total of 168.5 points, ahead of her big friend Rabuta (156), who won the first Olympic climbing medal for the U.S. women’s team, and Pilz (147.4).
In Le Bourget, on the outskirts of Paris, the Slovenian masterfully defended the gold she won in Japan three years ago (2021) in her Olympic debut in sport climbing.
“It was our wish. It was our pact to stand on the Olympic podium together. She has been through a lot. And I am very happy that she did it,” the Olympic champion emphasized, while Rabutu, who trained for the Games with Garnbreta from Slovenia, said the silver was even more special because of his family ties to France.
Poland’s Aleksandra Miroslaw won women’s sprint gold on Wednesday, followed by China’s Deng Likuan and Poland’s Aleksandra Kalucka.
In the men’s category, Britain’s Toby Roberts won the combined event on Friday, with Japan’s Anraku Sorato second and Austria’s Jakob Schubert third.
In terms of speed, the final on Thursday saw Indonesia’s Weddrick Leonardo take the Olympic title, with China’s Wu Peng coming in second and North American Sam Watson third.
At Tokyo 2020, combined climbing was combined with sprinting, and only one gold medal was awarded in both the men’s and women’s categories.
At the time, the Olympic champion was Spain’s Alberto Gines Lopez, and eight-time world champion Garnbret, who had been out of competition for a long time, won the Tokyo 2020 women’s tournament in 2023 after breaking her toe.
