It was a tough Saturday for Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi, the reigning Olympic high jump champion (with Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim). After complaining in the morning, the Transalpine rider was sent to hospital with kidney problems, and his participation in the final is in serious doubt.
“It’s been 10 hours and the kidney cramps are still there. The pain I felt this morning, as bad as it was, is nothing compared to what I feel inside. It’s gone. I was just taken to the ER after vomiting blood twice. I’m going to do some more tests to see what’s going on and I’ll let you know.

An hour after the first post, the Italian shared another on social media, apparently after being discharged from the hospital and with the guarantee: “I’ll be there!”, accompanied by several “angry” emojis. The high jump final will begin in two hours, at 18:00.
