More and more athletes are selling images of their bodies on the adult content platform OnlyFans to fund their dreams of winning an Olympic medal. Despite their talent in their sports, many are struggling to survive without the support of organisations like the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Jack Laugher, a British Olympic diving champion who is competing in Paris for the fourth time – he won gold and silver in Rio (2016) and bronze in Tokyo (2020) – says it’s “a really good way to make some extra money”. “I’ve got something that people want and I’d love to try and sell it,” he told the Daily Mail. New Zealand’s Robbie Manson (rowing), Canada’s Alisha Newman (pole vault) and Germany’s Timo Barthel (diving) are other athletes who have joined OnlyFans to ensure their presence in Paris. Newman, for example, used the money he made on the platform to buy a house and devote himself exclusively to training. “Amateur athletes will never make much money. I had to use my entrepreneurial skills,” he said. Australia’s Matthew Mitcham (diving), the first openly gay Olympic medallist, said it was “a privilege to see a body that works six hours a day, six days a week.” Responding to the trend at a press conference, IOC spokesman Mark Adams downplayed it: “I suppose athletes, like all citizens, are allowed to do what they can.”
