BE MP Mariana Mortagua said this Thursday that the housing package shows that “the vast majority have become disillusioned with the country”, criticizing the “ocean of tax freebies” on speculation and the fact that housing prices “remain astronomical”.
“We listened carefully to the prime minister and came to the conclusion that if this is the government’s response to the housing crisis today, then the vast majority, in fact, are disillusioned with the country. What the prime minister has just said is that home prices that are astronomical will remain astronomical,” Mariana Mortagua told reporters as a first reaction to the measures presented by the government.
Warning that “prices will not go down,” the BE deputy said that “part of the tax measures and incentives, for example, already existed and turned out to be ineffective.”
“Imagine that a legal entity that bought a building, evicted those who lived in it, that speculated in this building, can now sell the same property to the state and not pay capital gains tax. condemned.
Regarding the set of measures that “force the state to finance high incomes and large bank fees”, Mariana Mortagua was also very critical and pointed out that “banks can practice usurious rates, they can charge fees that families cannot cope with, and this state and it is the taxpayers who will be participating in these bank contributions.”
“I can guarantee that in a year we will be in the same place talking about the same housing crisis as today, because foreign interests and non-residents with a lot of money will continue to buy houses in big cities that residents cannot buy, because that they have no money because empty houses will remain empty, because the law on rent still allows very short-term contracts without protecting the stability of these contracts,” he lamented.
For BE, the measures taken by the government this Thursday do not solve the housing problem because “they are a tax surcharge for those who have made a profit, they are a free tax on speculation and will not drive home prices down like the prime minister did. …so well recognized.”
Faced with questions from journalists about whether she would be a candidate for the post of BE coordinator, which Katarina Martins would leave vacant at the next party congress, Mariana Mortagua said only: “I hope you understand, the Left Bloc takes housing very seriously, is one of our priorities. I’m here today to talk exclusively about housing.”
The measures of the Mais Habitação program will cost about 900 million euros and will be mobilized from the state budget, the finance minister calculated on Thursday.
