71-year-old woman in need of emergency medical care removed from cruise ship off Lisbon

On Tuesday, the Navy and Air Force coordinated the helicopter rescue of a 71-year-old woman with a suspected cerebrovascular accident (CVA) who was on board a cruise ship off the coast of Lisbon.

The alert was issued by the Cruzeiro MSC Virtuosa, which was sailing 200 nautical miles, equivalent to 371 kilometres, southwest of Lisbon, saying a passenger was showing signs of a stroke, the navy detailed in a statement.

The rescue was coordinated by the Navy through the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Centre (MRCC Lisboa) in coordination with the Air Force, which used an EH-101 helicopter from 751 Squadron for the rescue.

“The helicopter landed at around 4:00 p.m. at Figo Maduro airport and the passenger was taken to hospital,” the press release said.
