The Turks, forced to win, always had the upper hand in the game. They were more dangerous and even hit the post twice. However, in added time, Fenerbahce’s hopes were revived as they took advantage of Diakite’s own goal to advance to extra time.
Lille had to compromise after losing extra time and became more dangerous. However, it was with one less player (Mandya sent off) that they equalised and secured a place in the Champions play-offs thanks to a penalty (Djiku’s hand) converted by Jonathan David.
Following that exit, Jose Mourinho’s side were relegated to the Europa League group stage, where they could face their old team Porto.
