Malawi President Sees Need for Cooperation with Mozambique

Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera called Thursday’s cooperation with Mozambique in the economic, diplomatic, peace and security spheres indispensable, protecting the ties that lead to prosperity for both countries and peoples.

“Malawi’s prosperity and security depend on strong international cooperation, and it would be unsustainable for Malawi and Mozambique not to have very close ties,” Chakwara said.

The Head of State of Malawi delivered a speech of thanks upon receiving an honorary doctorate from Joaquim Chissano University during a visit to the capital of Mozambique.

Noting the expansion of the border line dividing the two countries, the head of state stressed the importance of reviving bilateral ties, seeking to leave behind the past of “anomalies of non-approach” between the governments of the two countries.

“I have placed deepening cooperation with Mozambique at the centre of my management and found the same spirit in my brother Filipe Nyusi. [Presidente de Moçambique]with whom I maintain a strong partnership,” said Lazarus Chakwera.

The President said South Africa’s neighbouring countries must work “proactively” through development cooperation for collective progress and prosperity.

“A country that isolates itself, even if it has sustainable resources, is doomed to collapse. In the context of the global village, threats and challenges are common and cannot be addressed alone,” Lazarus Chakwera stressed.

“The sovereignty of each nation cannot be confused with a unilateral approach, and to think that one can live alone is a fantasy,” he continued.

Joaquim Chissano University justified the honorary doctorate of Lazarus Chakwera with “strategic management thinking that has the potential to achieve positive results in the medium and long term in the development of Malawi, Mozambique and neighbouring countries.”

Malawi buys electricity from Mozambique and depends on Mozambique’s ports, mainly Nacala, for its international trade.

Lazarus Chakwera concludes this Thursday a two-day official visit to Mozambique, which served as an opportunity to assess cooperation between the two countries and sign documents aimed at strengthening ties between the two states.
