Fire in Madeira continues to rage after antenna was activated two and a half days ago

The fire that broke out on Wednesday in the highlands of Ribeira Brava in Madeira continues to rage, with some areas less intense, but air resources have already been deployed to fight the blaze.

According to Ribeira Brava Fire Chief Sidónio Pio, who told Luce, the fire was still active in hard-to-reach areas and at 8:20 a.m. teams on the ground were waiting to regroup.

The official also said that some of the fire had lost intensity, but stressed that there were areas with a lot of “mountain protrusions” that were difficult to access and that ground crews were waiting for air assets to arrive, an action that had already been activated at 08:20.

On Thursday, the flames spread to the highlands of the municipality of Camara de Lobos, reaching the Jardim da Serra mountains.

No homes were in danger early Friday morning.

According to the Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service, firefighting is complicated by high temperatures, very low relative humidity and strong winds.

Civil Protection received an alert about the fire at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday through the Regional Assistance Operations Command’s integrated communications center.

The fire started on an inaccessible slope in the parish of Serra de Agua and spread to the areas of Espigan and Trompica on Wednesday evening.

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the northern and southern coasts of Madeira, as well as the mountainous areas, are under orange warning (the second most serious) this Friday due to hot weather. Porto Santo is under yellow warning.
