The Executive Committee of the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) will propose Vice President Artur Lopes to replace José Manuel Constantino as president of the organisation. The decision will be put to a vote at a plenary session to be held in early September.
“The Executive Board of the Portuguese Olympic Committee unanimously decided this Friday to propose Vice President Artur Lopes to replace President José Manuel Constantino, who died on Sunday, until the elections that are scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2025,” reads a statement published on the official website of the CP.
The decision will be put to a vote at a plenary session to be convened in early September, the note also says.
Former Portuguese Cycling Federation President Artur Lopes was COP vice-president for 24 years, starting with Vicente Moura and serving three terms under José Manuel Constantino.
Constantino, who had led the Portuguese Olympic Committee since March 26, 2013, died on Sunday at the age of 74 after a long illness.
He led the Olympic organisation in Portugal’s two best missions at the Games, winning four medals at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 after his debut at Rio 2016.
He previously headed the Portuguese Sports Institute and the Portuguese Sports Confederation.
Author of books and articles published on sports, he was considered one of the greatest thinkers of this phenomenon in Portugal, which was recognized by the title of Honorary Doctorate from the University of Porto in 2016 and the University of Lisbon in 2023.
In the French capital, Portugal achieved its best Olympic results ever, winning gold in the Madison for Rui Oliveira and Yuri Leitan, who also won silver in the omnium, both in track cycling, silver for Pedro Pichardo in the triple jump, and bronze in track cycling for Patricia Sampaio in judo.
