Wind continues to have a strong impact on traffic at Madeira Airport

Winds continue to disrupt traffic at Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport this Sunday, with no aircraft able to land or take off, according to ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal.

The information provided indicates that as of 10:00, 10 flights had been operated from Porto Santo, Lisbon, Porto, Warsaw, Gran Canaria and Berlin.

Two other planes from Lisbon and Rome headed to other airports.

The situation also affects the relevant departures and many hundreds of passengers, both residents and tourists.

Traffic at Madeira Airport has been restricted since Saturday evening.

All regions of Madeira are the only ones in the country that are under the orange warning of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) for hot weather, and for the island of Porto Santo it is yellow.

A yellow warning, the least serious of the three, is issued by IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation, while an orange warning (level two) is issued when a moderate risk meteorological situation is too high.

Today’s forecast calls for periods of very cloudy weather with some clouds on the southwest side of Madeira Island.

Winds should be light to moderate, blowing from the north/northeast, moderate to strong, at 30 to 45 kilometres per hour, occasionally gusting to 70 kilometres per hour in the highlands, in the extreme east and west of Madeira Island and onto the island from Porto Santo.
