Extended until March 10 minimum services in schools

Minimum services in schools have been extended until March 10. In a note published this Friday by the Arbitration Board, one can read that once again at least three hours of classes per day are covered.

The decision came after the Independent Union of All Teachers and Educators (STOP) announced a new strike from February 27 to March 10. Among the reasons justifying this decision are the disparities between public and private education and the fact that the 2nd period evaluations must be completed by 32 March.

The court confirms that “an essential public service designed to meet pressing social needs” is at stake to justify the need to extend the minimum services set last week and in effect until 24 February. The decision was taken unanimously.

Minimum services cover both teachers and the non-teaching community necessary for the proper functioning of schools.

As with previous measures, pre-schools and 1st level schools must guarantee three hours of classes before lunch break, and the equivalent of three study periods at other levels. It should be noted that students must attend classes in all subjects during the week.

In addition to classes, support should also be guaranteed for students who benefit from additional measures within inclusive education, therapeutic support, support for students in vulnerable situations, enrollment of students in units integrated into Learning Support Centers, and continuity of activities aimed at social emotional well-being.

As for non-teaching staff, they must provide concierge service, catering and supervision of students in the school space.

The teachers’ strike began on 9 December. At stake are claims related to job insecurity and lack of dignity attributed to the profession. Since then, the revolt of the teaching community in the country has been felt in several demonstrations and notable strikes. One of the main topics analyzed is the length of service, which is frozen for six years.
