There are still two weeks left in August, but according to data released this Monday by the Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation (ICNF), it is already the month with the largest burnt area in 2024, double the figures for July.
According to the preliminary report released, 3,484 hectares burned between August 1 and 15, compared to 1,582 hectares a month earlier. The area burned in these first two weeks corresponds to 44% of the total area burned this year in mainland Portugal, which is 7,949 hectares.
The severity of fire impacts over the past two weeks has been mainly seen in forest areas (1,676 ha), as well as settlements (1,175) and agricultural land (633), changing the scenario of the previous month, in which a larger area of settlements (732) was burned compared to bushland (475) or agriculture (331).
