The Madeira Islands, where a rural fire has been raging for seven days, and Porto Santo are under a yellow warning for hot weather until 00:00 on Wednesday, IPMA said on Tuesday.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said that due to the persistence of high maximum temperatures, the northern and southern coasts and mountainous areas of Madeira will be under a yellow warning until 00:00 on Wednesday.
For the same reasons, Porto Santo Island will also be under a yellow alert until 00:00 Wednesday.
According to the institute, Madeira presents maximum and very high risk of rural fires in some regions on Tuesday and in the next few days.
The archipelago was previously under a yellow warning until 6pm on Tuesday.
A yellow warning, the least serious, is issued by IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.
This Tuesday, IPMA forecasts in Madeira periods of very cloudy weather and light to moderate winds from the north-east, moderate to strong in the highlands and in the extreme east and west of the island of Madeira, sometimes gusting to 60 kilometers per hour.
In Funchal, temperatures will range from 22 to 28 degrees Celsius, and in Porto Santo from 22 to 27 degrees.
A rural fire in Madeira broke out on Wednesday in the Ribeira Brava mountains, spreading to the municipality of Camara de Lobos the following day and to the municipality of Ponta do Sol over the weekend.
A rural fire in Madeira broke out on Wednesday in the Ribeira Brava mountains, spreading to the municipality of Camara de Lobos the following day and to the municipality of Ponta do Sol over the weekend.
During these seven days, authorities ordered almost 200 people to leave their homes as a precaution and set up community reception centres, but many residents have already returned, with the exception of Fajã das Galinhas in Câmara de Lobos and Furna in Ribeira Brava.
The firefighting effort was made more difficult by the winds and high temperatures, but there was no evidence of damage to homes or vital infrastructure. A firefighter was hospitalized for exhaustion, but there were no further injuries.
According to forecasts from the European Forest Fire Information System, cited by the regional government, seven thousand hectares have burned since the fire began.
The Judicial Police is investigating, but the President of the Executive Power of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, maintains that it was arson.
