The commitment of nurses to the strike in the Local Health Unit of Leziria (ULS), centralized in the Santarém Hospital, was about 86.5% and affected the functioning of several services such as the emergency department, operating room, outpatient surgery and most inpatient services.
According to Nuno Lopes of the Portuguese Nurses’ Union (SEP), which called for this strike on the morning and afternoon shifts this Wednesday, some of the reasons “are national, such as raising wages and increasing the work of nurses, but there are also reasons at the local level.”
In this ULS, nurses complain above all about the lack of staff, “which leads to frequent transfers of nurses from one service to another without proper integration,” as well as the amount of overtime, “which makes it very difficult to combine professional life with family life,” explains Nuno Lopes.
The Nurses’ Union says the new Council of Directors (CA), which took office in February, is unable to address the problems facing the class.
On the part of the CA, “there is openness to work on the areas that need to be addressed, but the issue of staff shortages, whereby the ministry has to ask the ministry to open vacancies and fill them, is in a very slow process” and this does not solve the problems,” says Nuno Lopes.
